Exhibition catalogue. A wide horizontal accordion-fold strip of sturdy kraft paper, torn at the edges, with mimeographed text and illustration on three sheets of white paper, also torn and mounted. The illustration (of an extremely long dachshund whose body runs through the centre of a village, draws a couple of circles, and ends up urinating) is hand-coloured. The title piece features a drawing of another dog, this one with the face of Mario Vargas Llosa; further along on the same side there is a brief curriculum of the artist, and a catalogue of the works on display; secured with a band bearing the artist’s signature, coloured with watercolour. In Bertha Caluff Pagés’s text there are several references to Mario Vargas Llosa and his eponymous work, but beyond the shared title and the canine portrait of the Peruvian Nobel laureate, the meaning of this allusion is not clarified. Ever since the Padilla affair (1968–1971) and Castro’s support for the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, Vargas Llosa’s attitude towards the Cuban Revolution has been critical (and later hostile); a hostility fully reciprocated by the Cuban regime. For many years, Vargas Llosa ceased to exist for official Cuba, whilst for many Cuban writers, he became the most admired Latin American novelist for his work. I haven’t quite managed to decipher the message of this catalogue: the two images, taken together, do not seem to say anything favourable about the Peruvian; Bertha Caluff, in her text, manages to say nothing at all. Well, you decide. This is one of the most beautiful of Vigía’s early publications. No. 122 (stamped) from an unconfirmed print run (150 copies?). WorldCat does not list any copies. Faint traces of foxing. An interesting and rare Vigía from the Periodo especial.
