This monograph is an attempt at reconstructing on paper the monastery of Tho.ling, the most important religious site of West Tibet. Part One assesses the history of Tho.ling from its foundation in 996 by the monk-king Ye shes 'od and the translator Rin chen bzang po. up to the 19th century. Part Two uses hitherto unknown documents belonging to Tho.ling to identify all its temples, chapels, stupas and other buildings composing the monastic complex. The significant parts of these classifications are translated here, accompanied by a critical analysis of their structure and contents. This material has been cross-checked with oral accounts provided by monks and notables of Tho.ling who lived there before the destruction of the Cultural Revolution, "Records of Tho.ling" also prevents a reconstruction of the entire monastery; Tibetan thangkas, sketches and paintings accompany the text in order to illustrate this reconstruction.
