A stunning still life featuring a lush bouquet of flowers, a porcelain vase, and a small sculpture of two *putti* (or cupids), created by the French artist Solange Devienne (1894–1961). Devienne was a French artist, painter, and watercolorist born in the late 19th century; her artistic career unfolded during the first half of the 20th century. She specialized notably in still-life painting, gaining acclaim for her detailed depictions of flower bouquets and vases. Her works are distinguished by their harmonious, delicate compositions—often executed on a large scale—and their classical realism.

A large, richly colored bouquet of roses dominates the center of the composition. The painting exemplifies the realistic and meticulous style characteristic of the genre—a style that gradually gained significant importance in art history. With roots in antiquity and a long history of popularity in Western art since the 17th century, the still life offers artists greater compositional freedom than other genres, such as landscape or portraiture. Prior to 1700, these works often incorporated religious and allegorical symbolism linked to the objects depicted. Also known as *naturalezas muertas* (still lifes), these works typically feature animals, flowers, fruit, food, plants, and the like. Their development emerged amidst a growing appreciation for painting and a surge of interest in naturalism and the imitation of nature—trends that had begun to take hold in the preceding century.

This piece reveals a theatrical quality and other Baroque echoes—evident, for instance, in the backdrop curtain, the use of chiaroscuro, and the arrangement of elements. It seeks to offer more than mere visual pleasure; it invites the viewer to contemplate the passage of time and the fleeting beauty of nature, albeit in a gentler manner than traditional Baroque still lifes.
