ALAS...is a debut memoir-in-verse chronicling a couples vacation to Scotland, England and Italy, but alas...the husband suffers a debilitating stroke in Scotland and instead of going on to England and Italy, they find themselves traveling through a strange new land. While the shore of their old life is always in view, it?s beyond reach as they struggle through waves of grief, hope, and back again. The poems take us from the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where a wee dram of whiskey is medicine for the soul, to a supernatural journey across the Atlantic in a Medevac plane the size of a SUV. Whether its a revelation discovered in fallen fruit, or the surprise of finding kindness in a carwash, to a beach walk where a driftwood man with only two limbs offers solace-the couple perseveres through valleys of depression, a vast tundra of fruitless cure-seeking, to finally arrive in a place of grace and acceptance.
